Our Magnuson Park Gallery Events

Living Artists Collective was originally started to build community among visual artists and their supporters, so each show we put on centers our events as a way to bring folks together. In planning our current show, “Support artists while they are alive” at Magnuson Park Gallery, LAC artists, volunteers, and leadership come up with many ideas of events to take place among the art. We narrowed it down to a couple things that we thought would best benefit the artists and prepare our supporters for what’s coming up with LAC: A business structure and tax workshop for artists, and a strategy and fundraising evening to get feedback from the broader community.

Keep scrolling to see photos and highlights from the opening reception on Friday, September 8th! The show runs until October 14th, 2023 with gallery hours every week Thursday-Saturday 12-3pm, plus events (of course!).

Sand Point Arts and Cultural Exchange at Magnuson

A business structure and tax performance.

You read that right. Executive Director Alaina Stocker approached artist and licensed enrolled agent Dinah J with Cobra Baby Art Collective LLC about creating a workshop that provided artists with foundational knowledge for running their art businesses. Dinah was very excited to oblige, and suggested an interactive performance piece in the form of an in-person workshop (with virtual recording available). Together with Dinah, participants will examine the metaphysical and practical realities of running an art business in Seattle.

This event will happen on September 23rd from 3-4pm at Magnuson Park Gallery and livestreamed online. In-person attendees will receive take-home notes as well as a virtual recording to refer back to. Virtual attendees are welcome and will receive the notes and recording, but will not be able to participate in asking questions during the performance.

This workshop is open to any type of artist and is priced on a sliding scale with limited sponsored (free) tickets available. Please purchase the ticket you can afford! You can also sponsor an artist’s ticket! Select that option when checking out on the Eventbrite page.

The future of LAC: A strategy and fundraising evening.

We have recently welcomed on Annah Nelson-Feeney as our new nonprofit board president. For the past several months she has taken the reins on creating a strategic plan for LAC's upcoming 3 years, interviewing folks and researching along the way. We think this will be very interesting to you as an arts supporter, so we created an event focused around explaining her findings and sharing our plan: The Future of LAC, a Strategy and Fundraising Evening.

This event will happen on September 30th, 6-8pm at Magnuson Park Gallery. Here’s what to expect:

Attendees do not need any previous knowledge of our organization to attend, and in fact we would love to see anyone new to LAC who wishes to support the arts and/or get involved with a nonprofit. Please bring a coworker or friend and join us on this journey. You will be providing us with valuable feedback as we work towards reaching potential arts supporters in fields such as tech, research, and the sciences (to name a few).

We encourage your attendance, even if you are currently unable to make financial contributions. This is a unique opportunity to peek behind the curtain of LAC as an organization and become more involved in the arts in your city. We thank you for stepping up to help secure the future of low-income visual artists in the Seattle area.

The Opening

The “Support artists while they are alive” opening reception happened at Sand Point Arts & Cultural Exchange, Magnuson Park Gallery on Friday, September 8th. Around 70 attendees filtered through to check out the gallery while enjoying beverages and snacks. Folks were encouraged to vote for their people’s choice picks in three different categories. You can vote at the gallery through Thursday, October 12th!

Be sure to attend the closing reception on October 14th, 2-4pm to hear the winners of people’s choice and jury favorites. These are cash prizes! Please donate so we can give more to these artists.

The wonderful HeZza FeZza performed on keyboard and vocals throughout the opening reception. A lucky few of us were able to snag a copy of her vinyl album before they sold out. Hezza got connected to LAC while meeting with Maddy Berkman of the Magnuson Park Gallery in preparation for an upcoming gallery show she’s coordinating featuring artists who live in housing within Magnuson Park.

We were able to grab some photos of artists who attended the opening reception with their work. If you aren’t already, follow us on Instagram @livingartistscollective to check out the features we’ve been posting of these LAC artists and their pieces.

Irene Wilde with her piece “The Blackest Bile”.

Joselyn Narvaez with her piece “Untitled”.

Marina San Miguel with their piece “Inner Strength”.

Scott Coffey with his piece “Untitled (The Whole World is Watching, We Must Be Nothing Less Than Fabulous)”.

The Podcast

Executive Director Alaina Stocker was interviewed for Magnuson Park SPACE 101.1 radio station, which has been released as a podcast episode for The Magnuson Park Gallery Exchange. Terriko Summers, a SPACE volunteer, asked Alaina about how LAC got started, stories from its existence so far, and the inspiration behind the current gallery show, “Support artists while they are alive”. Check it out!

Sand Point Arts & Cultural Exchange is a nonprofit organization made up of half the Magnuson Park Gallery and half SPACE 101.1, a low-power station which you can stream online.

We love sharing all our exciting updates and plans with you. If you haven’t yet, please subscribe to our newsletter and follow us on Instagram and Facebook to be the first to hear new things. We’ll see you at the show! Take care!
